\u00abW-HOLE is about the need of belonging and the sense of loss. The loss of a fixed place alters the space of orientation. Mental geography becomes deterritorialized: the need for a physical place creates migration ultimately eroding the notion of a limit, bringing up an indeterminacy that eludes spatial and temporal horizons. A Vanishing Homeland forces us to develop a chameleonic identity that is no longer bound to solidity but ever amenable to change: an identity that is no longer constant but itself transitional. Evading its colors of belonging, a transparent flag drifts in the wind taking on the appearance of the somehow random landscape surrounding it.\u00bb<\/strong>

\u00abW-HOLE e\u0300 un\u2019opera sul bisogno di appartenenza ad un luogo unito al senso di smarrimento dell\u2019individuo nella societa\u0300 contemporanea. La mancanza di un posto fisso, unitamente alla necessita\u0300 di trovare il proprio posto \u2013 genera Migrazione e una nuova percezione del concetto di Limite. L\u2019esperienza del viaggio traccia un paesaggio interiore che elude gli orizzonti spaziali e temporali. L\u2019alterazione del senso di orientamento produce una geografia mentale deterritorializzata. L\u2019 evanescenza del concetto di Patria porta alla scomparsa di un\u2019identita\u0300 solida che lascia il posto ad un\u2019identita\u0300 camaleontica in grado di adattarsi - per scelta o per necessita\u0300 - al mutamento, e al vivere dentro la transizione. The project started in 2013 and since then I have planted the flag in\u00a0<\/b>Punta Bianca<\/i><\/b>\u00a0in Sicily\u00a0(Agrigento, 2013); the abandoned Tempelhof Airport (Berlin, 2014);\u00a0the <\/b>Transit Zone<\/i><\/b>\u00a0at Sheremetyevo International Airport (Moscow, 2014); on the roof of Gao Brothers' studio at\u00a0<\/b>798 Art District<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(Peking, 2014); on the pedestal that used to hold Stalin\u2019s statue in Letn\u00e1 Park (Prague, 2015); and on the roof of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Turin, 2016).\u00a0<\/b>
<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0On the coast of Agrigento hundreds of people die every year in the sea trying to reach mainland Europe. They navigate with no name on the boat\u2019s bow.\u00a0<\/b>
<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Sheremetyevo International Airport is one of the three major airports that serve Moscow. During the Soviet period and the first post-Soviet years Sheremetyevo was one of very few points of international departure and entry. The<\/b>\u00a0Transit Zone\u00a0<\/i><\/b>inside the Airport is a neutral space where it is possible to remain without a Russian visa. For more than three weeks in 2013, Edward Snowden lived in the <\/b>Transit Zone<\/i><\/b>. The 30-year-old former US National Security Agency employee was trying to negotiate foreign asylum to avoid facing criminal charges in the US, including espionage, for divulging details about US electronic surveillance programmes.<\/b>
<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Berlin Tempelhof Airport was designed in 1923. As part of Albert Speer\u2019s plan for the reconstruction of Berlin during the Nazi era, the old terminal was replaced with a new terminal building in 1934. The airport was meant to become the gateway to Europe and a symbol of Hitler\u2019s \u201cworld capital\u201d Germania. Tempelhof Airport closed all operations on 30 October 2008. In August 2009, Berlin city officials announced that Tempelhof would be reopened in May 2010 as the city\u2019s biggest public park.<\/b>
<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0In China mass media and all other vehicles of expression, including art, are strictly controlled.\u00a0Artists and brothers, <\/b>Gao Brothers<\/i>\u00a0were denied travel documents for 12 years from the Chinese government because of the political nature of their work.\u00a0<\/b>Their studio is located in the\u00a0<\/b>798 Art District\u00a0<\/i><\/b>in Beijing.<\/b>
<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0In 2016 I was invited to exhibit at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo<\/b>.\u00a0<\/i><\/b>I planted my flag outside on the roof of the foundation.<\/b><\/p>

Questo progetto ha inizio nel 2013, anno in cui pianto la bandiera vicino la mia casa natale in provincia di Agrigento, davanti il mare. Da allora la bandiera \u00e8 stata piantata a Berlino all\u2019ex aeroporto di Tempelhof (2014); a Mosca nella Transit Zone dell\u2019 Aeroporto Internazionale di Sheremetyevo (2014); a Pechino sul tetto dello studio degli artisti cinesi Gao Brothers, privati del visto dal governo per oltre dieci anni. Nel 2016 pianto la bandiera a Torino sul tetto della FSRR Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (2016).
<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Nella costa di Agrigento centinaia di persone muoiono ogni anno in mare nel loro viaggio verso l\u2019Europa. Navigando su imbarcazioni senza nome.
<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/b>Sheremetyevo International Airport \u00e8 uno dei maggiori scali aerei che serve la capitale russa. Durante l\u2019era post sovietica Sheremetyevo era uno dei pochi punti di accesso. La Transit Zone<\/i> all\u2019interno dell\u2019Aeroporto \u00e8 uno spazio neutrale dove \u00e8 possibile sostare se non si possiede il visto per entrare in Russia. Nel 2013 per oltre tre settimane, Edward Snowden \u00e8 rimasto in questa zona di transito. Il trentenne ex dipendente della NSA (US National Security Agency<\/i>) stava cercando di negoziare asilo altrove per evitare di dover affrontare accuse negli Stati Uniti, compreso lo spionaggio, per la divulgazione di dettagli sui programmi di sorveglianza elettronica degli Stati Uniti.
<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/b>L\u2019Aeroporto internazionale di Berlin Tempelhof <\/i>fu progettato nel 1923. Durante il periodo nazista, come parte dell\u2019ambizioso progetto di Albert Speer per la ricostruzione di Berlino, il vecchio terminal viene sostituito con uno nuovo nel 1934. Il complesso in granito fu concepito per essere il principale punto di accesso all\u2019 Europa e simbolo della Germania di Hitler \u00abcapitale del mondo\u00bb. Dal 2008 l\u2019aeroporto non \u00e8 pi\u00f9 operativo. Nel 2010 nell\u2019antico terminal voluto da Hitler sorge il piu\u2019 grande parco della citt\u00e0.
<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0In Cina i mass media e tutti gli altri mezzi di espressione, compresa l'arte, sono severamente controllati. I Gao Brothers sono una coppia di artisti e fratelli che sono stati privati del loro passaporto per 12 anni dal governo cinese. Il loro studio si trova nel 798 Art District<\/i> a Pechino.
<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Nel 2016 sono stata invitata ad esporre alla Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo<\/i>. Ho piantato la bandiera fuori, sul tetto della fondazione.<\/span><\/p>
